Created in 2010, World Rhino Day on 22 September mobilises hundreds of organisations every year.

22 September 2024

Every year on September 22, the world comes together to celebrate World Rhino Day, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the protection of this endangered species. This year, the event takes on special meaning with the release of the animated film Ozi, Voice of the Forest, which features a remarkable character that highlights the unique qualities of these threatened animals: Honkus, a clumsy yet heroic rhinoceros.

Honkus stands out as one of the most lovable and memorable characters. Created by the teams at Mikros Animation, Honkus is portrayed as the last of her kind, a stubborn survivor in a world that seems intent on wiping her out. While she might not be the smartest animal, her loyalty, determination, and huge heart more than make up for her clumsiness. She represents a quiet strength, bringing moments of unexpected courage throughout the movie.

What makes Honkus so special is her complete commitment, despite the dangers she faces. Olivier Martiny, the lighting supervisor for the film, points out that “Honkus acts as if every moment is her last,” a trait that makes her a model of bravery. She doesn’t let fear or uncertainty paralyze her; instead, she charges ahead, head down, into the unknown. Her spontaneity and innocence become her greatest strengths, both in the story and in the message she delivers to the audience.

Alongside her heroic traits, Honkus embodies a powerful message about the need to protect endangered species. She symbolizes the last rhino, a poignant reminder of the extinction risk these animals face. Through her, the film raises awareness among young viewers—and beyond—about the urgent need to safeguard biodiversity.

Anne-Sophie Palermo, the compositing supervisor, explains that one of the film’s most striking lines is when Honkus says, “I am the last of my kind.” This simple statement reminds us how every loss of a species is irreversible, encouraging us to reflect on our role in protecting the world’s wildlife.

World Rhino Day is the perfect opportunity to honor extraordinary animals like Honkus. Although she’s a fictional character, she perfectly embodies the qualities we should cherish in real rhinos: their strength, resilience, and their unique place in the global ecosystem. Through her character, the film Ozi, Voice of the Forest shows us why it’s so important to protect these animals before it’s too late.

Honkus reminds us that heroes aren’t always who we expect. With her unwavering courage, endearing clumsiness, and loyalty to her friends, she leaves a lasting impression on the hearts of viewers. Like real rhinos, she deserves to be celebrated—not just for what she represents in the film, but for the lessons she teaches us in real life.
