It has been an incredible privilege for Mikros Animation to collaborate with DreamWorks Animation on Orion and The Dark. Our teams in Bangalore contributed animation services including modeling, lighting, surfacing, and compositing, while our Paris team handled CFX and animation. The film’s distinct handcrafted aesthetic and innovative storytelling are a testament to the bold artistic direction led by DreamWorks Animation.
DreamWorks Animation’s commitment to artistic innovation is showcased in Orion and The Dark, with production designer Jason Lamb and art director Christine Bian explaining how the team embraced an unfinished, handmade quality. This approach led to a visually distinct final look, emphasizing imperfection over hyper-realism. Experimenting with practical effects, the team also used iPhone footage to capture raw, organic visuals that were later blended with digital techniques, creating a unique mix of media.
