In this Meet The Makers, we sit down with Praveen T. Varghese, Animation Supervisor, to discuss his role in bringing Kamp Koral to life. Discover the creative challenges and innovations behind the newest adventure of our favorite sea sponge.
  • SpongeBob celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. When and how did you first become introduced to this iconic character?

I’ve always loved SpongeBob, whether it was those hilarious SpongeBob memes that started appearing everywhere, or those moments when I needed a good laugh and just wanted to unwind with a few episodes. Regardless, SpongeBob has become a part of my life, and learning that I was going to be working on its newest adventure, Kamp Koral, was truly exciting! It’s been an exhilarating journey filled with laughter and creativity, and I look forward to sharing it all with you.

  • What were the biggest technical challenges you faced in making this season?

This season, we pushed the boundaries with increasingly creative gags, wild poses, and action timing, which required us to be resourceful while working within the natural limitations of our animation rigs. But we found incredible ways to make it work. We relied on clear communication, collaboration, and breaking down problems into manageable pieces. By working closely with other departments and clients, we devised creative solutions for each challenge, ensuring those imaginative gags dazzled on screen!

  • What are the main differences between the work done on the first season and the second season?

Season 2 took things to a whole new level, embracing a bolder, wackier, and even funnier approach to the world of Kamp Koral. The team of artists continuously evolved, constantly learning and improving their craft. They delved deeper into each character’s backstory, understanding their evolution in this show centered around young SpongeBob and his friends. Collaboration and problem-solving were key, ensuring that the energy and humor of the 2D storyboards seamlessly translated into the 3D world. The focus was on honoring SpongeBob’s legacy while infusing it with a fresh, energetic vibe.

  • What software and animation tools did you use for this season?

While we utilized industry-standard software across all stages of production, the unique demands of the show’s style pushed us to develop several in-house tools designed to meet the creative vision for Kamp Koral, requiring a high level of flexibility and efficiency. These tools helped our artists streamline their workflow and tackle the challenges of creating a visually stunning and humor-filled show with greater ease. We’re proud of the innovative approach we took in developing these tools, which proved to be essential assets in ensuring a smooth and successful production process.

  • How did the collaboration between the different teams and departments go in producing this season?

Being back in the studio together for Season 2 after the pandemic made a significant difference, enabling us to work more efficiently and collaborate more effectively. The teams genuinely supported each other, sharing ideas and working together to overcome any obstacles. One of the things that made this season particularly successful was the proactive communication from our post-production (LRC) teammates. By identifying potential challenges early on, they gave the animators the opportunity to address them proactively, leading to higher-quality animation. This experience underscored the importance of communication in achieving a common goal!

  • How did your teams bring their own creative touch to the series while respecting the universe and characters of SpongeBob?

A significant factor in Season 2’s success was the incredible collaboration with our clients, who were genuine partners in the creative process. They encouraged us to infuse our own unique style and humor into the show while always honoring the core values of the SpongeBob universe. We drew inspiration from the treasure trove of classic SpongeBob cartoons, aiming to capture that same spirit of wacky humor and lovable characters. We pushed the boundaries of what was possible with acting changes, gags, and wacky visuals, striving to create something fresh and exciting while staying true to the original essence of SpongeBob.

Our clients’ creative insights and CG support were invaluable, and they were incredibly supportive throughout the entire process. From brainstorming ideas to providing constructive feedback, they played a pivotal role in helping us realize our vision. The collaboration fostered a truly synergistic environment, characterized by their positive energy and prompt turnaround times, which made the entire production feel seamless.
