Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years is the latest chapter in a global phenomenon spanning over two decades – and the latest result in the long-standing partnership between Technicolor’s animation brands and Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
The prequel series follows 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants and his pals as they spend their summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.
The Mikros Animation team was involved early in the efforts to bring SpongeBob’s latest adventures to the screen in the Kamp Koral series. Building up on the franchise’s history, the artists developed a new and richer look and feel, paying particular attention to the translation of the content from 2D to 3D for the first time in a series, while creating new creative opportunities.
All the details on the animation of the characters were thoroughly discussed from the early stages of the project and the best solutions were put in place. The animators underwent 2D workshops, so that they would get a deeper understanding of the director’s vision from animatics and to best implement them in 3D.”
